What Is Trademark Registration in the UAE?

Register Your Trademark With Legal Assistance

Trademark registration in the UAE is the official process of securing exclusive rights to a trade name, logo, or brand symbol. It grants legal protection under UAE intellectual property laws, preventing unauthorised use, imitation, or infringement.

In the UAE, registration is essential for businesses and individuals who wish to protect their brand identity and enforce their rights in cases of misuse or counterfeiting. This is particularly important when launching a unique name or logo in commercial activities.

EGSH, as a government-authorised centre, provides end-to-end support — from preparing the application and verifying compliance with Ministry of Economy requirements to managing publications and final certification — ensuring your trademark is registered correctly and without delays.

Who is eligible to register a trademark in the UAE?

Any individual, company, or organisation conducting commercial, industrial, or professional activities can apply for trademark registration in the UAE. Non-residents may also apply, but must submit the application through a UAE-registered trademark agent with a notarised and legalised power of attorney translated into Arabic. EGSH, as a government-authorised centre, handles the entire filing process on behalf of eligible applicants.

How long does trademark registration in Dubai take?

The Ministry of Economy reviews trademark applications within up to 90 days. After acceptance, the mark is published in the Official Trademark Bulletin for a 30-day objection period. If no objections are filed and the final registration fee is paid, the certificate is issued within several additional weeks. In total, the whole process usually takes between 4 and 6 months.

Is a trade licence required for a brand registration in the UAE?

Yes, a valid UAE trade licence is mandatory if the application is filed in the name of a company or establishment. Individuals applying under their name from within the UAE do not require a trade licence. EGSH, as a government-authorised centre, verifies your eligibility and ensures the correct documentation is submitted for brand registration.

What is included in the Ministry of Economy trademark registration fees?

The official fee for the UAE trademark registration includes AED 750 for the application, AED 750 for publishing the accepted mark in the Official Trademark Bulletin, and AED 5,000 for the final registration and issuance of the trademark certificate.

What are the penalties for delayed brand registration in the UAE?

If publication fees are not paid within 30 days from receiving the acceptance decision, a fine of AED 100 per month applies, up to AED 1,000 annually. If final registration fees are not paid within 30 days from the end of the objection period, a fine of AED 1,000 per month applies, up to AED 10,000 annually. The whole month is counted in both cases.

Who can apply for a trademark certificate in the UAE if the owner is based abroad?

If the trademark owner is outside the UAE, the application must be submitted through a UAE-registered trademark agent. A notarised and legalised power of attorney, translated into Arabic, must be attached. EGSH, as a government-authorised centre, can act on behalf of non-resident applicants to complete the UAE trademark registration process.

What is the difference between trademark registration and trade name registration?

Trademark registration grants legal protection for a brand’s name, logo, or symbol under UAE intellectual property laws, preventing unauthorised use or imitation. Trade name registration records a business name for licensing and commercial identification purposes, but does not provide brand protection or exclusive rights over its use.

When is the UAE trademark certificate issued?

The certificate is issued after the application passes examination, the accepted mark is published in the Official Trademark Bulletin, the 30-day objection period ends without objections, and the final registration fee is paid within the set deadline. EGSH verifies the accuracy of submitted documents and applications to avoid delays and procedural errors.
